STATEMENT BY XAVIER SUAREZ REGARDING CAMPAIGN INITIATIVES AND MAYORAL CANDIDACY
I am pleased to announce three important campaign initiatives for the upcoming November election.
First Initiative: Property Tax Reform
I will be supporting the property tax measures proposed by State Representative Vicki Lopez. Homestead owners whose homes do not exceed the median amount for our county ($575,000 on average for homes and condos) should not pay one penny of real estate taxes.
The $25,000 exemption, originally set in 1979 based on the state's median home value, should be recalibrated to reflect the current median home value within our county. I have already engaged in productive discussions with House Speaker Danny Perez, as well as Representative Lopez regarding this essential reform.
Second Initiative: Supporting Free Mass Transportation
The City of Miami must keep and expand free public transportation through its successful trolley service, which combines nicely with free Metromover. Efforts by a county commissioner to charge $1,200 a year for Metromover must be resisted, as that is the only component of the county's mass transportation system that works well.
Third Initiative: Insurance Reforms
We must work with the State of Florida legislature to reform the entire system of casualty insurance, beginning with having the State take over catastrophic insurance for all new affordable housing.
Mayoral Candidacy Announcement
I am honored to announce that on Tuesday, July 22nd at 10 am, I filed as a candidate for mayor. The city has made commendable progress in maintaining public order, stimulating significant private-sector economic growth, and reducing the millage rate. But property tax relief is of the essence.
